Department of Environmental Regulation
Laboratory/Office Complex

Tallahassee, Florida

This project involved the addition of approximately 79,000 square feet of laboratory, office and shop area to an existing 6-story office building located in an office/residential neighborhood. A master planning program called for secured spaces for bio assay, response operations and air quality site operations for the Department of Environmental Protection.

The building expansion was sited on approximately 13 acres located in southeastern Tallahassee. A single-family residential area was adjacent the west boundary on the site. Site development was controlled by Commercial Zoning, Leon County and the City of Tallahassee. Stormwater distribution was a considerable concern, and the proximity of the existing residential area and the existing zoning were major site parameters. The laboratory unit of the addition was detached in response to zoning considerations. Further segregation of the facility's solvents storage and gas cylinder storage solved the problems of site samples and vehicle decontamination procedures.
