Pensacola Police Department
Headquarters Reroof

Pensacola, Florida

STOA Architects was retained by the City of Pensacola to provide the design of a new roof for the Police Headquarters building. The existing ballasted single-ply system was unsuitable for Pensacola’s high wind environment. With extensive firsthand knowledge of the effects of high winds on a variety of roofing systems, the STOA Architects's design team selected a fully adhered single-ply membrane roof over sloped lightweight concrete as the appropriate re-roofing system for the building.

Complicating the re-roof operations were the numerous roof penetrations and roof-mounted equipment. Diligent inspections by STOA Architects ensured the quality of the membrane installation to maintain watertight conditions. By adding mechanically fastened perimeter bars, STOA Architects was able to secure a 120-mph wind speed warranty from the roofing manufacturer. This warranted system will provide the Police Department with a weather tight roof for at least the next 20 years.

The Police Headquarters and the City’s 911 system is now able to remain fully operational even after a major storm event. This building experienced no leaks or damage as a result of direct hits by Hurricanes Ivan or Dennis—both Category 3 storms.
