Base Housing Renovation
NAS Whiting Field, Milton, Florida

STOA Architects joined forces with Jack Moore & Co. to provide Design/Build services for the complete renovation of 117 dwelling units encompassing six distinct floor plans in the Whiting Pines Subdivision base housing area for NAS Whiting Field. The houses were built in the 1960's and were in need of an upgrade to meet current housing requirements and provide the tenants with modern amenities.

The single-family housing units required complete abatement of hazardous materials, involving the removal and disposal of asbestos and lead based paint. All floor, wall and ceiling finishes and substrate were demolished, leaving only the structural framing. The Design/Build Team revised the existing floor plans to reflect modern residential design, providing more open Living/Dining/Kitchen areas and converting existing carports into garages. The interior was upgraded with new finishes, and painted concrete masonry walls were replaced with painted gypsum board. The existing kitchens were completely renovated with new appliances and cabinets. All new plumbing and electrical fixtures provide a substantial upgrade in quality. The exterior has new insulated vinyl siding over the existing concrete masonry unit walls, and new shingle roofs replace the existing membrane roof system .

Five of the single-family houses were converted to handicapped accessible units. This involved modifications to the existing bathroom floor plans, making all doors accessible and providing the unit with a uniform accessible level floor. The kitchen cabinets in these units were designed to be adaptable to accessibility standards, as able-bodied personnel also would reside in these units.
