Woodham High School Reroofing
Pensacola, Florida

STOA Architects provided design and construction administration services for five reroofing projects at Woodham High School. The five buildings included the administration building, Physical Education building, Vo-Tech building, cafeteria, and gymnasium, all of which were damaged during Hurricane Ivan. Demolition was required on all five buildings, and in some cases the existing roof had to be removed and a new roof completely installed. Challenges included matching existing copper panels; designing an appropriate drainage system for the large, flat roof buildings; coordinating demolition and installation with the school's active schedule; keeping the buildings functional while work was completed; removal of hazardous materials such as asbestos; and meeting all hurricane wind load requirements. Extensive overflow drainage was designed for several of the roofs. Replacement metal roofing panels were matched to existing panels. Shingles were used to match existing shingles but also to meet current wind load requirements. Light weight concrete and built-up roofs were also used.
