CANSTRUCTION Comes to Pensacola
October, 2008
Nine area architecture and engineering firms participated in this unique food charity event—the first of its kind in Pensacola. Canstruction is a design/build competition held in cities throughout North America where teams of designers compete to build giant structures made entirely out of canned goods. Pensacola’s Canstruction event, benefitted MANNA Food Pantries, and the competitors built their entries at various venues displayed during Gallery Night, Friday, October 3rd.
Since Canstruction’s inception in 1982, ten million pounds of food have been donated to aid in the fight against hunger. After Pensacola’s Canstruction entries are judged, a DEcanstruction occurred, and all of the cans used to create the 3D sculptures were donated to MANNA’s food bank. STOA’s entry weighed in at 2,236 pounds!
The competition came with its own complete set of rules and regulations including creating the displays within a 10 foot by 10 foot space and a height not to exceed eight feet. The entries were judged for the following awards: Best Meal, Best Use of Labels, Structural Ingenuity, Juror’s Favorite, two Honorable Mentions and a People’s Choice Award. The local winner, Thompson Engineering, will go on to compete in Canstruction’s international event. Pensacola’s local jurors included: Malcom Ballinger, The Arts Council of Northwest Florida Board of Directors; Michael Boles, Sculptor; Thaddeus Cohen, AIA, City of Pensacola Community Development Director; Mathew Hoffman, Manna Food Pantries Board of Directors; and Francesca Maxime, WEAR TV Anchor/Reporter.
The local chapter of the American Institute of Architects organized the teams for this exciting event. Mark Essert, a principal at STOA Architects, organized STOA’s team. STOA’s Canstruction team practiced the build-out of their design in the lobby of our office on Government Street to generate additional interest in the event. STOA’s final design was constructed at the Pensacola Opera at 75 South Tarragona Street.
We’d like to thank the following firms for their CAN-tributions to the STOA Architects Canstruction design: Berube Leonard, Day Consulting, Gulf Breeze Consulting, Greenhorne & O’Mara, Joe DeReuil Associates, MEP Engineering Solutions, Peterson Engineering, and Schmidt Consulting Group.
