STOA Architects as architect of record, teamed with Gresham Smith & Partners to provide architectural design services for the Pensacola Regional Airport Expansion project. This project included the expansion of the concourse, ticketing and baggage claim areas, as well as the addition of a new parking garage and associated elevator lobby, skybridge and sitework. The design blends the technical functions of wayfinding with a careful selection of architectural elements that capture the image, culture and history of Pensacola. The expansion was designed to support the projected increase in passenger enplanements through the year 2005.
The new four-level parking garage provides secure parking for 1,400 vehicles and incorporates a revenue control system that monitors availability and guides vehicular circulation to specific locations within the garage. The first level is designated for rental car parking and includes kiosks for rental transactions. The second, third and fourth levels are designed for passenger parking. The garage is connected to the terminal via an open air skybridge that incorporates solar shading and rain protection elements. The garage is constructed of precast structural and architectural panels with three types of sandblasted finishes. The elevator lobby contains three elevators and three separate stairs for vertical circulation within the garage. The ground level includes a pedestrian circulation courtyard providing a direct path from the site parking areas through the garage to the terminal.
The concourse expansion included the addition of 2 new gates supported by two levels of holding rooms, escalators, elevators an jetbridges. The design included floor to ceiling windows for unobstructed view of incoming and outgoing aircraft. Solar shading devices were incorporated into the facade's design to respond to the climatic and solar exposures of this region. The ticketing area was widened by approximately 30 feet behind the existing ticketing area to provide necessary passenger queuing space. A new baggage claim conveyor system was added to supplement two existing systems. This addition required the existing airport receiving area to be relocated.
STOA Architects has recently recently been selected as a member of the design team to provide construction documents and construction supervision for a new Pensacola Regional Airport Terminal and Parking Garage Expansion project.
